The large Buc-ee’s travel center company based in Texas has obtained an $850,000 settlement as a result of its trademark infringement lawsuit brought against Born United, a military apparel company from South Carolina.
In June 2025, Buc-ee’s filed a lawsuit after Born United sold T-shirts and patches depicting a beaver, similar to the company’s well-known mascot, wearing tactical combat gear. Buc-ee’s claimed that the retailer had copied its trademarked branding and continued selling the items even after receiving a cease-and-desist notice.
Documents filed with the court in August indicate that the two companies have arrived at a settlement. As part of the agreement, Born United is required to pay Buc-ee’s $850,000 in damages and will forever be forbidden from using the Buc-ee’s beaver logo or any other designs that are considered confusingly similar to the travel center’s trademarks.
Born United must as well get rid of any leftover goods that feature the contested designs and take down the related advertisements. The company’s physical sites in South Carolina have also been named as defendants in the case.
This dispute is part of a number of trademark cases that Buc-ee’s has initiated as the company grows beyond Texas; the retailer has on many occasions taken legal action against businesses which it thinks are using logos, mascots or branding that might be confused with its well-known beaver image.
Such actions have on occasion caused controversy. For instance, in Ohio Buc-ee’s came into conflict with the local community after it took legal action against Beaver Mart, a small convenience store located in Beavercreek. The local residents and political figures supported the smaller business, showing the kind of reputational problems that can arise when aggressive trademark enforcement is carried out.
Even though there has been criticism about some of its legal disputes, the $850,000 settlement reached with Born United is a major triumph for Buc-ee’s since it is helping to safeguard one of the most well-known brands in the Texas convenience store and travel center sector.
