The Texas company’s Air Cover technology uses autonomous deployment and adaptable camouflage to help protect military assets from advanced surveillance systems.
Austin-based defense technology startup Vigil Autonomy, founded by Matt Goodman, has developed an autonomous camouflage system designed to help military vehicles, equipment, and personnel avoid detection by modern surveillance technology.
The system, called Air Cover, deploys camouflage above military assets to manage their thermal infrared and radar signatures, potentially making them more difficult to identify using advanced reconnaissance systems, including synthetic aperture radar (SAR).
According to Vigil Autonomy, Air Cover offers three configurations: a personal system covering 4 square meters, a unit system covering 9 square meters, and a larger asset system capable of covering 100 square meters. The company lists an active flight endurance target of two hours for its asset configuration, although this has not been independently verified. The system has also been described as operating at a maximum altitude of 10 meters, a specification not currently confirmed on the company’s technology page.
The technology supports two operating modes. Stealth ModeΒ provides camouflage intended to reduce detection, while Decoy ModeΒ uses active lift to position a selected signature away from the protected asset, potentially misleading enemy surveillance systems.
Unlike traditional camouflage systems that require manual installation and repositioning, Air Cover is designed for autonomous deployment, allowing military personnel to adjust coverage as operational needs change.
The innovation comes as militaries face increasingly sophisticated battlefield surveillance capabilities. Autonomous camouflage systems like Air Cover represent a potential new approach to protecting military equipment, combining robotics, adaptable camouflage materials, and signature management to improve survivability on modern battlefields.
