The IKEA store in San Marcos, Texas, will close on November 1, 2026, ending the Swedish furniture retailer’s first attempt to open a store in a smaller city in the state, having done so just 14 months earlier.
When the location covering nearly 35,000 square feet at San Mar Plaza opened in July 2025 it became a more convenient choice for shoppers on the I-35 route between Austin and San Antonio. Different from its traditional warehouse-sized stores, the smaller one had a more limited range of items but still allowed customers access to the full range of IKEA’s products through pickup and delivery.
On opening, the store had more than 2,500 products on display, about 2,000 of which could be bought immediately. The store also included an IKEA Swedish Food Market as well as merchandise aimed at residents of Central Texas, such as the large number of college students in the area.
IKEA has announced that it has decided not to renew the lease of the store, stating that this action is in keeping with its wider strategy aimed at making its products more affordable, accessible and sustainable. The company gave no reason for the closure other than sales performance or any other specific factor.
The San Marcos site was presented as an alternative for customers who had previously had to go to IKEA’s larger stores in Round Rock or Live Oak; after the closure, those stores will still be available, together with the IKEA locations that are operating within Best Buy stores in South Austin and Alamo Ranch.
The fact is that IKEA is still investing in its online shopping, home delivery, and pickup services, which shows that the closure of the store in San Marcos is simply a change in its retail strategy and not an exit from the Central Texas market.
The fact that the closure has occurred shows the difficulties that retailers can encounter when trying out smaller store formats, especially since they have to strike a balance between their traditional brick-and-mortar stores and the increasing demand for online ordering, pickup and delivery.
