The rapid expansion by Texas of its data centres and artificial intelligence infrastructure is leading to unprecedented demand for electricity, which is placing additional strain on the state’s power grid and is causing companies to look into alternative energy solutions.
At the Data Center World Power 2026 event held in North Texas, the topic was a major point of discussion with industry leaders examining the kind of infrastructure needed to back the expanding digital economy. Since AI development is speeding up the building of energy-consuming data centers, there are questions as to whether electricity generation and transmission can keep up with this demand.
The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) expects peak electricity demand to reach 368,000 megawatts by 2032 as a result of anticipated growth among data centres and other large electricity users.
In order to meet the challenge, companies are looking into methods of producing and handling electricity directly at their data centre locations. Possible solutions involve on-site power generation, battery storage and microgrids, all of which can assist the facilities in managing demand while at the same time reducing the extra strain placed on the main grid.
For example, Mesa Power Solutions is developing modular generation systems that can be combined to form larger power units, while FlexGen is focusing on battery technology, which is intended to smooth electricity demand and help reduce the strain that large facilities place on the grid.
People in the industry believe that these technologies might also contribute to improving the overall reliability of the grid by lowering the risk of shortages, brownouts, and outages as electricity consumption rises.
As Texas continues to draw in large amounts of investment in AI and digital infrastructure, the need to extend its power system to match the demands of the data centre industry has become a major issue in ensuring that businesses and other consumers have a reliable supply of electricity.
