Another wave of commercial development is currently underway in the I-35 corridor, involving a 1.2 million-square-foot H-E-B store and several restaurant and recreation projects.
The grocer, headquartered in San Antonio, plans to build its new H-E-B at 15300 S. I-35, converting the long-abandoned former landfill into a retail site with the supermarket as the main feature; this development is part of the continued business growth between Austin and San Antonio.
In Buda too, development of restaurants is progressing, with Layne’s Chicken Fingers planning to spend about $400,000 on a location at 381 Old San Antonio Road, the site which had earlier been home to a Zaxby’s restaurant.
Calacas Tacos & Bar, headquartered in South Texas, is opening its first Central Texas location at 240 Old San Antonio Road. According to a state filing, approximately $300,000 is being allocated to the restaurant. The chain already operates restaurants in Brownsville, San Benito, Pharr and South Padre Island.
The city is likewise investing money in recreational facilities; the first stage of the Buda Sportsplex project, which has a total cost of nearly $15 million, has recently been completed. This project represents a major extension of the existing Buda Championship Park and will provide athletic fields as well as facilities for athletes, spectators and other people who visit the park.
The fact that various projects are underway shows continued investment in retail, restaurants, and infrastructure in Buda as development accelerates along the Austin-San Antonio corridor.
