H-E-B, a leading Texas grocery chain, has announced the closure of its longstanding Spicewood Springs store in northwest Austin later this summer. This closure will mark the end of operations at one of the company’s oldest Central Texas locations.
The store, located at 12860 Research Boulevard in Austin, will officially close on Friday, July 31.
Reason for the Store Closing
- According to H-E-B, the store’s lease is nearing expiration, and the company has chosen not to renew it.
- An employee informed MySA that the decision followed a routine evaluation of H-E-B’s store network.
- The Spicewood Springs location was originally built in the early 1980s, making it one of H-E-B’s smaller, older, and more outdated retail sites in Austin.
Official Statement from H-E-B
Cathy Harm, H-E-B’s Senior Vice President for Central Texas, stated that the company remains committed to serving the area through its newer, nearby stores.
In a statement to MySA, Harm said:
“While decisions like this are never easy, we are grateful to the customers, Partners, and community who have supported this store over the years.”
She also said H-E-B has already invested in newer and more modern nearby stores
to provide expanded services, improved shopping experiences, and greater convenience.
Customer and Employee Support Measures
- To facilitate the transition following the store’s closure, H-E-B announced it will offer free curbside pickup and delivery to nearby residents in August.
- The company also said that all employees at the Spicewood Springs location will be offered positions at other H-E-B stores.
Alternative H-E-B Locations in the Vicinity
Customers can shop at several nearby Austin-area stores, including:
- North Hills H-E-B — 10710 Research Blvd.
- Parmer and McNeil H-E-B — 6001 W. Parmer Lane
- Lakeline H-E-B plus! — 14028 N. U.S. 183
- Anderson Mill H-E-B plus! — 11521 N. FM 620
- Parmer and Mopac H-E-B — 12407 N. MoPac Expressway
Significance of the Closure
This closure reflects broader trends within the retail and grocery industry, including consolidation into larger-format stores, modernization of aging retail locations, shifting customer expectations for curbside and delivery services, and strategic real estate decisions tied to lease economics.
For Austin residents, the closure further illustrates the rapid evolution of Central Texas retail corridors, changing neighborhood demographics, and continued redevelopment pressure on older commercial properties.
