Republican challenger for Texas Agriculture Commissioner discusses priorities, endorsement by Gov. Abbott

Gov. Greg Abbott has made an unusual political move by endorsing Nate Sheets in the Republican primary for Texas agriculture commissioner, backing him over incumbent Sid Miller, who is seeking a fourth term. Sheets says the endorsement signals a push for higher standards at the Texas Department of Agriculture, with a renewed focus on serving farmers, ranchers, and Texas families.

Sheets, the founder of the honey company Nature Nate’s, outlined priorities focused on strengthening Texas agriculture by ensuring that state institutions, such as schools and universities, purchase Texas-grown products first. He also emphasized the need to help farmers and ranchers increase revenue amid rising costs, noting expanded marketing opportunities within Texas and internationally.

On labor issues, Sheets supports a statewide E-Verify requirement, arguing it would provide stability and fairness for agricultural employers while complementing existing H-2A guest worker programs. Abbott praised Sheets’ experience and vision, saying he would be an asset to the state.

The winner of the March 3 Republican primary will face Democrat Clayton Tucker in the November general election.
