A Texas grocery chain has once again taken the top spot in a national ranking, outpacing major competitors such as Costco, Trader Joe’s, and Amazon amid rising food prices, when shoppers are feeling the strain.
San Antonio-based H-E-B was named the best grocery retailer in the United States, marking the fifth time in nine years the company has earned the No. 1 ranking in Dunnhumby’s annual grocery study. The report praised the family-owned retailer for excelling in value, product quality, customer experience, and product selection.
Founded in 1905, H-E-B operates more than 440 stores and continues to strengthen its reputation as a trusted regional brand. This year’s results were notable in that the top three grocery chains were all regional operators. Massachusetts-based Market Basket placed second, followed by Wisconsin-based Woodman’s.
National chains rounded out the rest of the top 10, with Costco coming in fourth, followed by Aldi, WinCo Foods, Trader Joe’s, Amazon, Wegmans, and ShopRite. Amazon, which previously topped the rankings in 2021 and 2022, dropped two spots this year, while Sam’s Club fell six places.
The study analyzed 81 major grocery retailers using a combination of financial performance data and feedback from more than 11,000 shoppers. Participants evaluated stores on pricing, quality, convenience, operations, and online shopping options.
The rankings arrive as consumers across income levels face growing financial pressure. Rising grocery prices, limited job growth, and stagnant wages have made shoppers more cost-conscious, according to Dunnhumby executives. Federal data shows food prices increased 3.1% over the past year, reinforcing the importance of value and trust in today’s retail environment.
