An Austin-area blasting company is expanding into San Antonio with a $3.2 million new facility set for construction on the city’s far North Side. According to filings with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, work on the project, Erfurt Blasting Company Inc.’s first-ever San Antonio base, is scheduled to begin on December 8 and is expected to finish by April 2. The privately funded 4,928-square-foot building will sit at 27356 Bulverde Road.
Erfurt Blasting, headquartered in Round Rock, has been a leading player in Texas construction for over 50 years. The third-generation company specializes in controlled blasting for rock excavation, a crucial process for road building, utilities, and major site preparation, as well as the demolition of industrial structures and bridges. Its founder, Marcus Erfurt, gained his early training with explosives while serving in the Navy Seabees during World War II. After time in Colorado’s mining industry, he moved to Texas in 1968 and launched the company four years later. The firm gained recognition for its role in shaping Austin’s development, including the use of controlled blasts in constructing parking garages and other structures.
